WORTH-REPEATING

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . A WHILE AGO IN ONE OF MY PREVIOUS POSTS I MENTIONED AN IDEA THAT I THOUGHT HAD SOME MERIT.THE IDEA IS THAT THE CAR MAKERS OR DEALERS OR EVEN THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT IN ONTARIO MAKE A LAW TO PROMOTE THE ENVIRONMENT BY HAVING ALL MOTOR VEHICLES SOLD IN THE PROVINCE TO HAVE A STICKER WARNING THE PUBLIC OF THE CONSEQUENCES TO HEALTH AND/OR ENVIRONMENT . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .FOR EXAMPLE A STICKER ON A LICENCE PLATE COULD SAY "WARNING,THIS MOTOR VEHICLE EMITS SO MANY LBS OR TONNES OF CARBON DIOXIDE" . . . OR .. . ."WARNING THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS TO THE ENVIROMENT" . . . .OR . . . .."WARNING THIS CAR CAUSES DEFORESTATION WHEN NEW HIGHWAYS ARE BUILT" .. . . . . . . .OR . . . . . . ."WARNING THIS VEHICLE CAUSES SMOG" . . . . . . . .OR . . . . "GREENHOUSE GAS " . . . . .THE ANALOGY IS THE SAME AS ALREADY USED ON CIGARETTE CARTONS TO WARN PEOPLE OF HEALTH RISKS LIKE LUNG CANCER . . . . . . . .TH

POLITICIAN'S-SPEECH

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . At a fundraising dinner last night, Ontario Conservative leader John Tory announced that Ontario needs to get going on building new nuclear plants because nuclear energy has shown itself to be "safe, reliable, affordable and it is greenhouse-gas free." . . .. . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . . . . . . . . THIS STATEMENT BY A MISGUIDED POLITICIAN WAS MADE IN THE SPRINGTIME OF 2007 . .. . . . . . . .IT IS PLAIN TO SEE THAT THE ENVIRONMENT IS NOT VERY HIGH IN THE PRIORITY LIST FOR THE PC PARTY OF ONTARIO . . . . . . . . .UNFORTUNATELY BECAUSE OF THE HOLD HIS MULTINATIONAL CORPORATION FRIENDS HAVE ON THE MEDIA,HIS PRO NUCLEAR MESSAGE WILL BE REPEATED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. . . . . . . .REGARDLESS OF THE INACCURRACIES ... . . .FOR ONE: THE WORD "AFFORDABLE" THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY HAS DEMONSTRATED TIME AFTER TIME ITS COMPLETE INABILITY TO STAY WITHIN BUDGET,AND GUESS WHO PAYS FOR ANY OVERRUNS ?? WHY THE ONTARIO TAXPAYER OF COURSE.

NO TO NUKES

. . .. . . . . LOS ANGELES TIMES NEWS ARTICLE(A-MUST-READ)... . . No to nukes It's tempting to turn to nuclear plants to combat climate change, but alternatives are safer and cheaper. July 23, 2007 JAPAN SEES NUCLEAR POWER as a solution to global warming, but it's paying a price. Last week, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake caused dozens of problems at the world's biggest nuclear plant, leading to releases of radioactive elements into the air and ocean and an indefinite shutdown. Government and company officials initially downplayed the incident and stuck to the official line that the country's nuclear plants are earthquake-proof, but they gave way in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Japan has a sordid history of serious nuclear accidents or spills followed by cover-ups. It isn't alone. The U.S. government allows nuclear plants to operate under a level of secrecy usually reserved for the national security apparatus. Last yea

FLOODS-ENGLAND

.. .. ..... ................... . . . . . .Climate change may be culprit, said Tim Evans of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management, adding that the situation matched predictions of how global warning would affect Britain. Britain had one of its hottest and driest summers on record last year. ``What we now think of as extreme events will occur more often than in the past, and the extremes will get more extreme,'' Evans said. . .. . . .. . . .. . . . . . . . apparently its the biggest floods in england since 1947 and already it has surpassed that year, with more rain on the way.

DAMM-THE-EARTHQUAKES

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . FULL SPEED AHEAD . . . . . . . . . . Sun Jul 22, 5:51 AM ET TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) is likely to suffer extra costs of at least 1.7 billion dollars after its nuclear power plant was damaged by an earthquake last week, a media report said Sunday. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IT SEEMS AS THOUGH OUR GOVERNMENT(ONTARIO) AND SOME SOUTH EASTERN STATES(USA) ARE NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE LESSONS LEARNED BY THE JAPANESE IN RECENT DAYS,REGARDS THE SAFTEY OF NUCLEAR REACTORS . .. . . . . . .BUT .. . . . .THE PEOPLE IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE CONCERNED. . . . . .ONTARIO AND SOME AMERICAN STATES ARE IN THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR THE NECESSARY AGREEMENTS TO BUILD MORE NUCLEAR REACTORS.......FOR THE USA THIS WILL BE THE FIRST NEW REACTORS(IF APPROVED) IN OVER THIRTY YEARS . . . . . .HAVE THEY AND ONTARIO NOT HEARD ABOUT ENERGY CONSERVATION ? ?? HOME- ENERGY- AUDITS

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The federal government's new program to evaluate the energy efficiency of Canadian homes and recommend upgrades has major flaws that will take months to fix, a Star investigation has learned. After auditing the same Toronto house, four companies came up with four different energy ratings – ranging from 37 to 46 out of 100 – and called for renovations ranging from $3,000 to $25,000. And while they all said replacing the old, wheezing furnace with a smaller high-efficiency model was a priority, as well as patching cracks that leak heat, other recommendations varied, from upgrading the fireplace to replacing three exterior doors. One auditor incorrectly stated the basement lacked insulation. That means homeowners could spend big money on ill-advised retrofits and waste as much as $10,000 in grant money from the federal and provincial governments. .. . .... . . ... . .. . . . . .. . the above article in saturdays(july 21)toronto star . . . . . .expo

CARS ARE EXPENSIVE

. . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . Gristmill - Fri, 2007-07-20 17:59 By Clark Williams-Derry Everyone knows that cars are expensive, right? Still, it may come as a surprise to find out just how much money we spend getting from place to place. The cost of the car itself -- typically the second biggest purchase many families make in their lives -- is just the start. When you start adding in the cost of gasoline, and car insurance, and maintenance and repairs, and parking, and taxes to build new roads and maintain old ones, and license fees, and the medical costs of traffic accidents ... boy, I could go on all day ... suffice it to say, the zeros start adding up. A while back I asked the estimable Yoram Bauman to wade through consumer spending figures to try to figure out how much we actually spend on cars in a year. Cutting to the chase ... In the Northwest states -- Washington, Oregon, and Idaho -- about 19 percent of all consumer spending goes towards transportation. A bit

WHATS-WRONG-WITH-NUCLEAR ?

. . . . . .. . . . . . .What's wrong at Olkiluto It's massively behind schedule. Construction that was supposed to take four years will now take at least six. It's massively over budget. The original cost estimate was 2.5 billion euros. Now it's expected to top 4 billion euros. The project was supposed to require no public subsidies. In reality it is reliant on an export guarantee financed by French taxpayers and a dirt-cheap loan from public banks. The original quality requirements weren't being met - so they were relaxed. The consequences of a faulty reactor being put into service could be disastrous. And besides all that, nuclear power is a nightmare of problems in general. There's no proven solution to the piles of waste, encouraging more countries to use nuclear power leads to nuclear weapons proliferation, the plants are ready made terrorist targets... Nuclear is a costly and dangerous distraction from real solutions to climate change like saving ener

QUAKE-DAMAGES-NUCLEAR

Japanese officials released a list Tuesday of 50 malfunctions at a nuclear power plant, the day after a large earthquake sparked fresh debate over the safety of the tremor-prone country's nuclear power facilities. About 13,000 people were staying in schools and other secure buildings in the quake zone 250 kilometres northwest of Tokyo.(Koji Sasahara/Associated Press) The malfunctions included fires, water and oil leaks and pipes knocked out of place by Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Co., the company running the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant. . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . .WHEN THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY PROMOTES THEIR FORM OF ENERGY THEY SELDOM MENTION THE RADIOACTIVE SPILLS OF WASTE AND TRITIUM LACED WATER,EXTREME EXPENSE(TAXPAYER FUNDED) AND URANIUM MINING WHICH REQUIRES TONNES AND TONNES OF EXCAVATED MINERAL DEPOSITS TO MAKE A SINGLE POUND OF ENRICHED PRODUCT. . . . . . . .SELDOM DO THEY TALK ABOUT THE HEALTH SIDE EFFECTS AND THE COST OF TR

quake + nuclear =disaster

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .On Tuesday, officials said about 100 drums containing low-level nuclear waste fell over at the plant during the quake. They were found a day later, some with their lids open, said Masahide Ichikawa, an official with the local government in Niigata prefecture. A spokesman at Tokyo Electric Power Co., which runs the plant, said the company was still trying to determine whether any hazardous material had spilled but said there was no effect outside the plant. "We have no information at this time that there is any effect on the outside environment," TEPCO spokesman Manabu Takeyama said. Another leak at the Kashiwazaki power plant would feed fresh concerns about the safety of Japan's 55 nuclear reactors, which supply 30 percent of the quake-prone country's electricity and have suffered a long string of accidents and cover-ups. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . another wake up call for the people of planet earth,as if we dont't have

ENERGY SHELL GAME (ONT)

. . . . . . . . . . .. .. . . . Province's Electricity Exports Compromising Ontarians' Health: Report Monday July 16, 2007 CityNews.ca Staff Exporting electricity to the U.S can be a big money maker for Ontario, but according to a new report it comes at a price for people right here in the province. New data from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance Monday claims that the extra electricity that coal-fire power plants are producing for sale south of the border is taking its toll on Ontarians. The report estimates the pollution created by the export of electricity claimed 130 lives in 2006 and put hundreds of others in hospital. "The supply crisis in Ontario is largely over thanks to conservation programs, renewable power projects and new high-efficiency gas generators. But instead of seizing the opportunity to expedite the coal phase out, Ontario Power Generation is padding its bottom line with power export profits," said OCAA Chair Jack Gibbons. . . . .. . . . . . .. .

NORTH-POLE-SWIM ?

. . . . . . . . . . . . British man calls North Pole swim a tragedy Updated Sun. Jul. 15 2007 8:41 PM ET Canadian Press TORONTO -- A British swimmer who says he wants to wake up politicians around the world to the threat of climate change has successfully completed a kilometre-long swim in the freezing water of the North Pole. Lewis Gordon Pugh swam Sunday for 18 minutes and 50 seconds in temperatures of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius in just Speedo briefs, cap and goggles. "I am obviously ecstatic to have succeeded but this swim is a triumph and a tragedy,'' the 37-year-old British lawyer said after coming out of the water. "A triumph that I could swim in such ferocious conditions but a tragedy that it's possible to swim at the North Pole.'' . . . . . . . . . . YES ITS TRUE,AND ITS JUST BEEN DONE AS THIS NEWS ITEM REPORTS. . . . . . . IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO DO ONLY FIVE OR TEN YEARS AGO,BUT THANKS (?) REASONS-TO-GO-VEGGIE

. . . . .. . . . . . . . Carbon dioxide emissions aren’t our only environmental concern, of course. There’s deforestation, water and air pollution, world hunger, and more. According to Greenpeace, chickens raised for KFC and other companies that “produce” chicken flesh are fed crops that are grown in the Amazon rain forest. And according to the U.N. report, raising animals for food is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.” To whit, more than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain to feed farmed animals; farmed animals are fed more than 70 percent of the corn, wheat, and other grains grown in the U.S.; and almost half of the water and 80 percent of the agricultural land in the U.S. are used to raise animals for food. . . .. . . . . . . . . .AFTER READING THE ABOVE NEWS ITEM AND SIMILAR STORIES I MYSELF HAVE DECIDED TO BECOME VEGETARIAN ALTH

THE 20% SOLUTION

. ...... . . . . . . . . . . .IN THE INTERESTS OF REDUCING GREENHOUSE GASES . .. . . I PROPOSE A "20 % SOLUTION" FOR CANADA. . ..... .ERGO: CAR MAKERS SHOULD VOLUNTEER TO CUT AUTO PRODUCTION ANUALLY AT LEAST 20 %, ... . . .AT THE SAME TIME OIL COMPANIES AGREE TO AT LEAST A 20 % CUT IN OIL PRODUCTION AND EXPLORATION .. ... . . . .FAILURE TO DO SO WITHIN A SPECIFIC TIME FRAME WOULD BE SUFFICIENT REASON FOR THE FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS TO MAKE MANDITORY LEGISLATION TO IMPOSE THE 20% CUTS. . .. . . . BOTH OF THESE INDUSTRIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR AROUND FORTY PERCENT OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND IF CANADA IS SERIOUS ABOUT STOPPING CLIMATE CHANGE,THEN THEY MUST ACT . . . . . . . .WHAT ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES ??YES I AGREE THEY ALSO MUST DO SIMILAR CUTS .. . . .THE HEALTH OF THIS PLANET DEPENDS ON IT.

. . . . . . . . . . WORKERS at a city centre cosmetics shop are to bare all today in an attempt to encourage shoppers to buy goods that have no packaging. Staff from the Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics store will protest on Princes Street while wearing nothing but aprons as they highlight the damaging effect that packaged goods have on the environment. The drive is part of a national campaign by the firm, which will see staff in 55 cities making naked protests. The store's founder, Mark Constantine, said: "Companies like ours need to think outside the box and present customers with innovations that allow them to buy truly naked products." . . . . . . . . . .. . . MOTORIZED-MADNESS

FOR MANY REASONS . . . .EACH POLY OR PLASTIC BOTTLE IS MANUFACTURED FROM OIL AS A BASIC INGREDIENT . .. . . .AND WE NOW KNOW THAT OIL IS IN SHORT SUPPLY AND EXPENSIVE.......NEXT COMES THE TRANSPORTATION FROM THE WATER SUPPLY PLACE TO THE GROCERY STORE,ALSO THIS USES A LOT OF GAS OR DEISEL FOR THE TRANSPORTER ... .. .SOME BOTTLERS ARE LOCATED OVERSEAS,THAT MEANS IT TRAVELS BY SHIP USUALLY OVER THOUSANDS OF MILES ,AGAIN EXPENSIVE AND USING OIL.THEN THERE'S THE PROBLEM OF DISPOSING OF THE WATER BOTTLES.GENERALLY IT ENDS UP LAND FILL OR IN SOMEBODY'S BACK YARD OR GARBAGE PAIL . .. SINCE THE POLYETHYELENE BOTTLE IS TOXIC THERE IS UNDERSTANDABLY A HEALTH CONCERN . . . . . . . . . . . . GREEN FESTIVAL THING

. . .. . . . . ..Isn't it a bit ironic that a green festival thing is taking place at the most concrete, plantlife-deprived space in the entire GTA? ................ THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE COMMENTS MADE BY AN OBSERVANT WEB SURFER IN TORONTO,CANADA . . . .. . .A SO CALLED ENVIRONMENTLY FRIENDLY CITY........WHILE THE REST OF THE WORLD CELEBRATES LIVE EARTH DAY...............WE STILL HAVE A CAR ORIENTED SOCIETY WHERE EVERYTHING WE DO IS FOR THE AUTOMOBILE AND ITS ILK.

IF I WAS PRIME MINISTER

..............OF CANADA....I WOULD RAISE THE TAX ON A LITER OF GAS TO FIFTY PERCENT FROM ITS PRESENT RATE OF ABOUT TWENTY PERCENT . .. .. .BUT INSTEAD OF LETTING THE OIL COMPANIES MAKING A HUGE PROFIT ON THEIR EIGHTY PERCENT CUT .. . . . . . AND RE-IVESTING SOME OF IT TO FIND MORE OIL.....I WOULD INSTEAD TRY TO REPAIR SOME OF THE DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT CAUSED BY BIG OIL ......AND DISCOURAGING THEM THROUGH TAXATION FROM FINDING MORE OIL UNTIL RAMPANT OUT OF CONTROL GAS CONSUMPTION BY MOTOR VEHICLES IS STOPPED.

vegetarians- beware

.. . .. . . . .. I USED TO THINK THAT ALL VEGETARIAN FOODS WERE A SAFE AND HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO MEATS. . . . . . . .NOT ANY MORE . . . . . . YESTERDAY WHILE SHOPPING AT A MAJOR GROCERY SUPERMARKET I DISCOVERED SOME VEGETARIAN BURGERS IN THE FROZEN FOOD SECTION. . . .AFTER READING THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS ON THE LABEL I WAS HORRIFIED TO LEARN THAT ONE OF THE MAIN INGREDIENTS WAS HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL AND /OR PALM OIL . . . . .THIS OIL IS ONE OF THE WORST OFFENDERS IN CAUSING HEART ATTACKS . . . .IN FACT IT IS SO BAD IT HAS BEEN BANNED FROM USE IN NEW YORK CITY . . . ..SOOO ....IT MAY BE TECHNICALLY VEGETARIAN AS IT SAYS ON THE LABEL .. . .IT CERTAINLY IS NOT A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO MEATS .....
