NUCLEAR VOTE INDIA

Image
India imports about 75 percent of its oil, and Singh, the architect of India's 1991 transformation from a socialist-style economy to a capitalist one, has argued the country needs the nuclear deal to power its financial growth and lift hundreds of millions of its 1.1 billion citizens out of poverty. Closing Tuesday's debate over the confidence motion, Singh said in a speech to lawmakers that the deal would "lead India to become a major power center of the evolving global economy." But the speech was presented only in written form because shouting opponents kept Singh from speaking. Even by the standards of India's theatrical and often chaotic political culture, the politicking of the past week and the actual debate were considered ugly. A former solicitor general, Harish Salve, called the scandal-laden vote "the worst defeat of Indian democracy." He was especially horrified by the spectacle of lawmakers waving bundles of cash on Tuesday, which he termed

AL GORE CHALLENGE

Gore challenges US to abandon oil Gore said Americans need to change "not just light bulbs, but laws" [AFP] Al Gore, Nobel laureate and former US vice president, has urged Americans to shift from electricity generated by fossil fuels to renewable energy within a decade. Gore challenged Americans to "shoot for the moon" on Thursday, comparing the scale of the challenge to landing a man on the moon, a goal set by John F. Kennedy in the 1960s. "I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 per cent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years," Gore said. "When president John F. Kennedy challenged our nation to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely in 10 years, many people doubted we could accomplish that goal," he said. Gore said the shift to new energy sources was needed to ensure "the survival of the United States of America as we know it ... the future of human civilization

ECO TIPS

Standard light bulbs give off 90 per cent of their energy as heat. New compact fluorescent "spiral" bulbs are 75 per cent more efficient and fit in standard sockets. If you combined all the "heat leaks" in an average Canadian home, you would have a hole the size of a basketball! Proper weather stripping and caulking of doors and windows can reduce heating bills by 25 per cent. A typical car produces three times its weight in carbon dioxide emissions – a major greenhouse gas. Light cars produce fewer emissions and cost less. Annual fuel costs average $648 for a new Volkswagen Jetta and $2,067 for a Ford Expedition 4x4. Refrigerators are an energy-hogging home appliance. Replacing a 10-year-old refrigerator with a new EnergyStar-approved model would save enough energy to light your home for more than three months. Encourage your local government to move towards energy efficient communities. Encourage your city to expand transit and other alternatives, make city opera

2 CYCLISTS DEAD

. . . .-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok...let's stop all the BS...the fact is that 4 cyclists were hit from behind by a car in broad daylight on a flat stretch of double lane highway. The DRIVER of the car is responsible for the safe operation and control of the car and obviously this did not happen. Why, we may never know but too often cyclists and pedestrians are killed by inattentive motorists who then get more sympathy from society and the courts than the victims and the victims families receive. Don't you think it's time the penalties for these kind of tragedies should be stiffer sentences for the DRIVERS and not stupid comments about how bicycles should not be allowed on roads in the first place? Maybe if the fines/sentences and social outrage about drivers killing innocent people were more severe, more drivers would take the responsibilty for the safe operation of their vehicle more seriously and less people would di

200 PRIESTS PROTEST

Image
Tens of thousands of South Korean car workers have added their voice to opposition against resumed US beef imports. The workers, along with about 200 priests, joined weeks of anti-government protests on Wednesday, gathering at Seoul's city hall to condemn the government of Lee Myung-bak, the president. The protest came a day after US beef returned to South Korean stores under a deal Lee struck with the US in April. THE 200 PRIESTS IN SOUTH KOREA (PICTURED ABOVE) WERE JOINED BY 1,000'S OF AUTO WORKERS WHO STOPPED WORK FOR 2 HOURS IN SYMPATHY (news exerpt courtesy of al jazeera- -july3-2008) . . . . .the workers were concerned about the bad health side effects of eating red meat . . . . .they may also be concerned of the damage done to the environment by shipping beef products halfway around the world .
