Province's Electricity Exports Compromising Ontarians' Health: Report

Exporting electricity to the U.S can be a big money maker for Ontario, but according to a new report it comes at a price for people right here in the province.
New data from the Ontario Clean Air Alliance Monday claims that the extra electricity that coal-fire power plants are producing for sale south of the border is taking its toll on Ontarians. The report estimates the pollution created by the export of electricity claimed 130 lives in 2006 and put hundreds of others in hospital.
"The supply crisis in Ontario is largely over thanks to conservation programs, renewable power projects and new high-efficiency gas generators. But instead of seizing the opportunity to expedite the coal phase out, Ontario Power Generation is padding its bottom line with power export profits," said OCAA Chair Jack Gibbons. . . . .. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . .. . .. . .WE IN ONTARIO SOLVE ONE PROBLEM OF THE POWER SUPPLY CRISIS .. . . . .... . . . . DCist music editor Amanda Mattos reports that a letter signed by some 250 scholars, from Ken Burns to David McCullough, puts Wal-Mart on notice: "The Wilderness is an indelible part of our history, its very ground hallowed by the American blood spilled there, and it cannot be moved."
